Our Teachers

Our director, Anna is passionate about music and the development of children.

She creates a fun, informal, social setting that spurs engagement and supports each child's musical development.

photo Anna King

Growing up in Vancouver, Anna sang in choirs and studied classical piano. After studying piano and harpsichord at UBC, she went on to graduate studies in harpsichord at the University of Toronto. During the eleven years she lived in Toronto, she taught piano privately, freelanced as a harpsichordist, and accompanied local choirs including the Mississauga Children's Choir.

She discovered Music Together® through a friend after the birth of her son. Fascinated with watching his musical development, Anna found the information and support she was searching for in Music Together's exciting music and research. She whole-heartedly believes in the Music Together philosophy and program: all children are musical; therefore, all children can achieve basic music competence; modeling of parents and other primary caregivers is essential to a child's musical growth; this growth is best achieved in a playful, musically rich, and non-performance-oriented learning enviroment. She became a registered Music Together teacher in the summer of 2006 and started Music Together Phoenix Song that autumn. Anna was awarded Music Together Certification Level I status in November 2008, having demonstrated outstanding achievement in teaching, musicianship, program philosophy, and parent education. The award was granted by the Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ, Kenneth K. Guilmartin, Founder/Director.

She is happy to be back in her hometown, and is thrilled to be teaching Music Together. It is the perfect blend of her two great joys - children and music. She holds a Masters degree in historical performance, a Bachelor degree in music, is a member of the BC registered music teacher's association (BCRMTA), and is a certified Music Together teacher. She is having fun learning guitar, recorder and mountain dulcimer.

photo Bernadette Mann -- On Leave

Bernadette Mann was born in Scotland, where she studied piano and theory as a child and sang in school choirs. After completing a degree in Mathematical Science at Glasgow University in 1990, and two further diplomas in education and information management, Bernadette taught in public and private schools in Scotland. During that time, she began to study Classical voice in Glasgow and started to perform in operatic productions.

Bernadette has also studied Classical guitar and written songs. She formed her own Celtic/rock band, performing her own songs in many venues around Glasgow. One of her songs was used in an Edinburgh Fringe First award winning play.

In 1999 Bernadette moved to Portugal where she worked at an international school and continued her private vocal studies. She came to Canada in 2002 to study at The Toronto School of Music, where she completed a professional artistic certificate in operatic performance.

Since moving to Vancouver, Bernadette has been concentrating on being a mother. She has performed with local groups such as the North Shore choir Espiritu, and is a registered Music Together teacher.
